What Is Roller Derby?
Roller derby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport played on roller skates by two teams, each with up to 15 members. While the sport originated in the United States, it now boasts over 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide.
Modern roller derby began its revival in the early 2000s in Austin, Texas, as an all-female, skater-run sport. Over time, the sport has evolved to include all-male teams and all-gender games while staying true to its do-it-yourself (DIY) roots and community-driven spirit.
In gameplay, each team designates one player as the “jammer,” who wears a star on their helmet and scores points by lapping opposing team members. The remaining players, called “blockers,” work together to assist their jammer while simultaneously blocking the opposing jammer. This combination of offense and defense creates a thrilling, strategic game dynamic.
Players in roller derby often adopt pseudonyms, known as “derby names,” which are playful and creative, featuring puns, alliteration, and pop culture references. These names add an extra layer of individuality and fun to the sport.
Beyond the excitement of the game, roller derby promotes inclusivity and personal growth. The sport welcomes all body types and skill levels—there is no such thing as a “derby body.” Skating builds cardiovascular endurance, strength, balance, and coordination, while the team's camaraderie offers emotional and mental health benefits. Practicing and competing requires focus, quick decision-making, and strategy, creating opportunities for personal development and stress relief.
About the Synergetic Sweethearts
Synergetic Sweethearts Roller Derby (SSRD) is a full-contact, flat-track roller derby league based in Northern Michigan. Founded in 2020, we were born out of a shared passion for skating, empowerment, and building a vibrant, inclusive community. What started as a small group of skaters eager to bring the energy and excitement of roller derby to Northern Michigan has grown into a dynamic team that values connection, teamwork, and giving back to our community.
Our league embraces the "Do It Yourself" (DIY) spirit, a cornerstone of modern roller derby since its revival in the early 2000s. As a skater-operated organization, every member contributes to the league’s success, whether on the track, coordinating events, or working behind the scenes. This collective effort ensures that SSRD is not just a team but a family, built on mutual support and a shared commitment to positively impacting both on and off the track.
At SSRD, inclusivity is a core value. We welcome athletes of all skill levels, body types, and backgrounds, believing that roller derby is a sport where everyone can find their place. From our practices to our bouts, we strive to create an environment where skaters can grow, learn, and challenge themselves while having fun. For us, roller derby isn’t just about competition—it’s about camaraderie, resilience, and the joy of being part of something bigger than yourself.
Beyond the track, we are deeply committed to giving back to the communities we call home. Through events like youth skating sessions, community outreach, and charity fundraisers, we aim to share our love of skating while making a tangible difference. Our team believes in the power of community and works hard to connect with local organizations, businesses, and individuals to support causes that matter.
While winning bouts is always exciting, our focus has never been solely on the scoreboard. Instead, we prioritize providing opportunities for every skater to participate, grow, and feel valued, regardless of skill level. At SSRD, it’s not about being the best—it’s about being your best and lifting each other up along the way.
Together, we are stronger. Together, we play as one. We are Synergetic Sweethearts Roller Derby, and we can’t wait to see you at the track—whether you’re skating, cheering from the stands, or joining our league as a skater, volunteer, or supporter.
