Synergetic Sweethearts Roller Derby CODE OF CONDUCT

The goal of SSRD is to ensure a positive environment and the safety of skaters, officials, referees, and spectators at all times. All members are expected to follow the applicable Code of Conduct. Members are expected to actively contribute to the League and Team's success, which includes:

• Respecting oneself and others

• Creating a positive environment

• Displaying good sportsmanship

• Developing positive relationships with teammates

• Meeting attendance requirements

• Following the directions of coaches

• Working toward team goals

Team play will be emphasized over individual player accomplishments. Members are expected to collaborate with coaches and teammates to achieve team goals.

Members are expected to arrive on time and be prepared for practices and games. It is the responsibility of every player to communicate with the coach about any delays in arrival or absences in advance.

Everyone benefits from respectful communication. Members will refrain from using foul language, shouting, or inappropriate gestures when speaking with teammates, coaches, officials, or referees. Issues should be resolved according to the Conflict Resolution document.

No member shall engage in any activity that undermines the reputation of the league, the ability of any members to develop skills, or the ability of others to enjoy the sport of roller derby. Harassment and discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated, nor will illegal activity while representing the league.

Use of drugs or alcohol during practice or games is strictly prohibited. Any member suspected of being under the influence of an intoxicant will face disciplinary action.

Members are expected to conduct themselves in a sportsman-like manner, as their behavior affects the team and the league. Members should play fairly and within the rules, respect the final decisions of officials, honor opponents, and treat spectators and venues respectfully.

 

SAFETY STANDARDS

Personal Safety

Players will take an active role in reducing the risk of injury to themselves and others. This includes but is not limited to:

• Maintaining personal physical fitness

• Following the directions of coaches, trainers, and referees

• Learning and following the rules

• Wearing proper safety equipment

• Reporting any potential hazard to player safety

Players must wear an approved helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards, and mouth guards at all times in the proper manner. Players are responsible for ensuring that their equipment is in good repair and fits properly. Players must replace damaged safety equipment as needed.

Safety first! Wear the required safety equipment during practices and bouts. Players cannot participate if they are hurt. League coaches and staff reserve the right to prohibit any skater from participating if they believe the skater poses a risk to themselves or others. Listen to your body and refrain from skating in the following conditions:

• Pregnancy

• Illness

• Medicated condition that impairs awareness

• Emotional state that impairs functionality

• Injury or re-injury that could cause serious risk

Children at Practice

We understand that childcare can affect participation, and we aim to be as accommodating as possible. Therefore, the Board has mandated an official policy:

• Children must stay in an area that ensures their safety.

• Parents should speak to their children before practice regarding appropriate behavior (e.g., calm bodies, quiet voices) and safety.

 

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Grievance Procedure

The Board of Directors will appoint a Conflict Resolution Committee (CRC) to address and resolve issues as they arise. CRC members must remain objective and impartial. The grievance process is as follows:

1. Step 1: The complainant should first attempt to privately address the issue with the person involved. If uncomfortable, they may request the presence of the Team Captain or another senior member.

2. Step 2: If the issue is unresolved, the complainant may approach their Team Captain or an Officer of the Board for informal mediation.

3. Step 3: If mediation does not resolve the issue, a formal grievance should be submitted to the CRC using the grievance form. The written grievance should include a description of the issue, any evidence, and witness information.

4. Step 4: The CRC will review the grievance and may request a response from the defendant. All parties will be provided with a copy of the grievance.

5. Step 5: The CRC will determine the appropriate course of action, which may include interviews, hearings, written affirmations, suspensions, or expulsions.

Confidentiality will be maintained during the grievance process. Complainants may request anonymity, but the CRC may need to disclose identities for investigative purposes.

The CRC’s decision is binding.

 

DISCIPLINE POLICY

Minor Violations

Minor violations include, but are not limited to:

• Unsportsmanlike behavior

• Negative gossip

• Negative representation of SSRD

• Verbally abusing another member

• Refusal to follow directions from coaches or rink representatives

• Damaging the league’s reputation or business relationships

1. First Minor Violation: Verbal warning.

2. Second Minor Violation: Written warning.

3. Third Minor Violation: Written warning and suspension for 2 weeks or 1 bout.

4. Subsequent Minor Violations: Written warning and suspension for up to 6 minor violations in a 12-month period.

5. Seventh Minor Violation in 12 months: Expulsion.

Major Violations

Major violations include, but are not limited to:

• Aggressive or threatening comments/behavior

• Violent physical actions toward another member, volunteer, or spectator

• Serious disregard for SSRD rules

• Repeated minor violations

• Participating in events after being prohibited

• Intentional property damage

1. First Major Violation: Suspension for 2 weeks or 1 bout.

2. Second Major Violation: Suspension for 2 months or 2 bouts.

3. Third Major Violation: Expulsion.

Grounds for Immediate Expulsion

Immediate expulsion may occur under the following conditions:

• Criminal charges related to violent crimes

• Physical violence toward skaters, coaches, or spectators

• Disclosure of confidential information

• Embezzling SSRD funds

• Skating under the influence of alcohol or drugs

• Harassment or discrimination

If expulsion occurs:

• The member must relinquish any title or position within SSRD and may not participate in any further activities.

• Any SSRD property must be returned or criminal charges may apply.

• The expelled member will forfeit any fees paid.
